Mr. Askerov decided to pursue a career in the law after realizing that he could do much more to help the people of our community as an attorney.
Mr. Askerov graduated summa cum laude from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He went on to study at the top-ranked University of Washington School of Law, graduating with honors in 2012. During law school, Mr. Askerov volunteered with the Immigrant Family Advocacy Project and was awarded prestigious externships with the Chambers of the Honorable Richard C. Tallman at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Department of Justice at the Seattle Immigration Court. Mr. Askerov also honed his litigation skills with the University of Washington’s Immigration Law Clinic, successfully representing clients in removal proceedings in immigration court.
Mr. Askerov began working with Black Law, PLLC, during his third year in law school. He joined the firm as a full-time associate in November, 2012. Over the years, Mr. Askerov has proven himself to be a zealous advocate who works tirelessly to defend the firm’s clients.
Mr. Askerov’s knowledge of immigration law has enabled him to effectively represent non-citizen clients in obtaining post-conviction relief for immigration purposes. This area of law is frequently referred to as “crimmigration.” In 2016, Mr. Askerov taught a seminar on post-conviction relief for non-citizen clients with the Washington Defender Association. Mr. Askerov’s post-conviction practice has taken him all over Washington. Mr. Askerov has litigated post-conviction cases in Benton County, Clallam County, Chelan County, Cowlitz County, Douglas County, Grays Harbor County, King County, Kitsap County, Kittitas County, Lewis County, Mason County, Okanogan County, Pierce County, Snohomish County, Thurston County, and Yakima County. Mr. Askerov’s experience with appeals has allowed him to secure victories for his clients in the Washington Court of Appeals, the Washington Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Askerov has also represented clients before the Washington Board of Clemency and Pardons. In 2014, Mr. Askerov secured a gubernatorial pardon, a very rare form of relief, for a client whose drug conviction resulted in devastating immigration consequences. The proceeding was broadcast on TVW: http://www.tvw.org/watch/?eventID=2014091030.
Mr. Askerov represents clients in appeals, administrative proceedings and criminal cases. His areas of focus include civil protection orders, DUI, domestic violence, appeals and post-conviction relief.
